This course will explore the complex forces at work in the emergence of modern East Asia through a selection of primarily Chinese and Japanese literary texts. How was modernity perceived at the turn of the 19th century? How did the advancement of the West complicate this perception? Considering a variety of genres from literary to popular, we will chart the course of modern expressions and concerns in primarily the Japanese and Sinophone worlds of the late 19th - mid-20th centuries.
