The East Asian Languages and Cultures Department announces a call for proposals for “The Stanley Spector and Richard Yang Undergraduate Student Awards for Studies in East Asian Languages and Cultures.”
This grant, made possible by a generous fund established by Washington University alumnus Alex Primm and his wife Cathy, will provide students with up to $4500 to conduct study in East Asia or on an East Asian topic.
Students engaged in the study of an East Asian language and/or culture are invited to apply. These awards are meant to support students who have well-defined projects that will assist them in furthering their understanding of an East Asian subject.
Potential projects/programs may include:
· participation in an approved study abroad program;
· travel to and participation in an academic conference;
· participation in an internship with an East Asian focus (in the US or East Asia);
· community outreach with an East Asian focus (such as conducting programs at local schools, libraries, elder-care facilities, etc.;
· travel to libraries for independent study projects
Other ideas are welcomed.
Potential awardees must meet the following conditions:
· Have projects/proposals that involve China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, or Korea
· Be currently registered in an EALC course
· Be able to demonstrate how the grant will further their studies of East Asia
Preference will be given to:
· Declared majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or East Asian Studies
· Students who have demonstrated financial need (indicate in proposal if participation in activity is contingent on receiving an award)

Application Deadline: To be considered for summer 2022, students must submit an application by March 11, 2022.
To apply, please provide Krystél Mowery in the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department office with the following items:
1. A one-page proposal explaining the project and the way it interfaces with the EALC mission (see mission statement below), how it will advance the awardee’s personal goals. The proposal should include inclusive dates and a statement of how the awardee will share the outcomes of the project with the EALC community upon return (such as, a class presentation, participation in Major/Minor events, written report, etc.).
2. A transcript (informal)
3. An itemized budget
4. One letter of recommendation in support of the project, emailed to the EALC Office.
5. Optional: A resume

The mission of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, for faculty and students alike, is to explore the complexity and richness of human experience as expressed in the languages, cultures, and literatures of China, Japan, and Korea.
Note: EALC must abide by University international travel policies regarding COVID-19; at this time travel is allowed during summer 2022.
