Motoki Long-Nozawa is a Lecture of Japanese Language and specializes in proficiency-based instruction and inclusive pedagogy.
Motoki Long-Nozawa joined WashU in 2025 and teaches Japanese. His teaching approach is based on proficiency-based instruction and communicative language teaching. In addition, he designs language learning space using the framework of Universal Design for Learning to strive to create inclusive language classrooms for all. Long-Nozawa’s research interests include gender and sexual identity construction, inclusive language pedagogy and policy analysis, and queer theory. He has been working with LGBTQ+ language learners who are studying Japanese. Prior to joining WashU, Long-Nozawa taught Japanese at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University, and Langara College, all of which are in Vancouver, Canada. He completed two master’s degrees specializing in curriculum & pedagogy and language & literacy education at UBC. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in the Institute of Education at University College London (UCL), UK. His research project at UCL focuses on inclusive language pedagogy and language education policy analysis.
