First Annual David Sands Holloway Memorial Awards

EALC recently awarded three students the David Sands Holloway Memorial Award for papers that explore issues of gender in Japanese literature and culture.

Adam Manfredi, PhD candidate in Japanese and Comparative Literature, received the award for Best Graduate Paper on Culture and Gender for his paper “The Poetics of Consciousness: Family Position and Point of View in Onnazaka.”

Addison Liang (BA ’22, East Asian Studies) won for Best Undergraduate Paper on Japanese Culture and Gender for her paper “A Tale of Two Mothers: Inescapable Female Subservience in Modern Japanese Literature.”

Leandra Djomo Nkamdoum (second major in Korean) received an Honorable Mention for Best Undergraduate for her paper “The Hunger Games: How Isolating Environments Create Female Appetite in Yamambas.”
